  5.              The "Perl Artistic License"

  7.                 Preamble
  8.  
  9. The intent of this document is to state the conditions under which the Perl
  10. Package may be copied, such that the Copyright Holder maintains some
  11. semblance of artistic control over its development, while giving Perl users 
  12. the right to use and distribute Perl in a more-or-less customary fashion, 
  13. plus the right to make reasonable modifications.
  14.  
  15. Definitions:
  16.  
  17.     "Package" refers to the collection of Perl-kit files distributed by the
  18.     Copyright Holder, and derivatives of that collection of files
  19.     created through textual modification.
  20.  
  21.     "Standard Version" refers to such a Package if it has not been
  22.     modified, or has been modified as specified below.
  23.  
  24.     "Copyright Holder" is whoever is named in the copyright or
  25.     copyrights for the Perl package.
  26.  
  27.     "You" is you, if you're thinking about copying or distributing
  28.     this Package.
  29.  
  30.     "Reasonable copying fee" is whatever you can justify on the
  31.     basis of media cost, duplication charges, time of people involved,
  32.     and so on.  (You will not be required to justify it to the
  33.     Copyright Holder, but only to the computing community at large
  34.     as a market that must bear the fee.)

  36.     "Freely Available" means that no fee is charged for the item
  37.     itself, though there may be fees involved in handling the item.
  38.     It also means that recipients of the item may redistribute it
  39.     under the same conditions they received it.

  41. 1. You may make and give away verbatim copies of the source form of the
  42. Standard Version of this Perl Package without restriction, provided that you
  43. duplicate all of the original copyright notices and associated disclaimers.

  45. 2. You may apply bug fixes, portability fixes and other modifications
  46. derived from the Public Domain or from the Copyright Holder.  A Package
  47. modified in such a way shall still be considered the Standard Version.

  49. 3. You may otherwise modify your copy of this Perl Package in any way, 
  50. provided that you insert a prominent notice in each changed file stating how 
  51. and when you changed that file, and provided that you do at least ONE of the
  52. following:

  54.     a) place your modifications in the Public Domain or otherwise make them
  55.     Freely Available, such as by posting said modifications to Usenet or
  56.     an equivalent medium, or placing the modifications on a major archive
  57.     site such as uunet.uu.net, or by allowing the Copyright Holder to include
  58.     your modifications in the Standard Version of the Perl Package.

  60.     b) use the modified Perl Package only within your corporation or 
  61.     organization.

  63.     c) rename any non-standard executables so the names do not conflict
  64.     with standard executables, which must also be provided, and provide
  65.     a separate manual page for each non-standard executable that clearly
  66.     documents how it differs from the Standard Version.

  68.     d) make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.

  70. 4. You may distribute the programs of this Perl Package in object code or
  71. executable form, provided that you do at least ONE of the following:

  73.     a) distribute a Standard Version of the executables and library files,
  74.     together with instructions (in the manual page or equivalent) on where
  75.     to get the Standard Version.

  77.     b) accompany the distribution with the machine-readable source of
  78.     the Perl Package with your modifications.
  79.  
  80.     c) accompany any non-standard executables with their corresponding
  81.     Standard Version executables, giving the non-standard executables
  82.     non-standard names, and clearly documenting the differences in manual
  83.     pages (or equivalent), together with instructions on where to get
  84.     the Standard Version.

  86.     d) make other distribution arrangements with the Copyright Holder.

  88. 5. You may charge a reasonable copying fee for any distribution of this
  89. Perl Package.  You may charge any fee you choose for support of this Perl 
  90. Package. You may not charge a fee for this Perl Package itself.  However,
  91. you may distribute this Perl Package in aggregate with other (possibly
  92. commercial) programs as part of a larger (possibly commercial) software
  93. distribution provided that you do not advertise this Perl Package as a
  94. product of your own.

  96. 6. The scripts and library files supplied as input to or produced as
  97. output from the programs of this Perl Package do not automatically fall
  98. under the copyright of this Perl Package, but belong to whomever generated
  99. them, and may be sold commercially, and may be aggregated with this Perl
  100. Package.

  102. 7. C subroutines supplied by you and linked into this Perl Package in order
  103. to emulate subroutines and variables of the language defined by this Perl
  104. Package shall not be considered part of this Perl Package, but are the
  105. equivalent of input as in Paragraph 6, provided these subroutines do
  106. not change the language in any way that would cause it to fail the
  107. regression tests for the language.

  109. 8. The name of the Copyright Holder may not be used to endorse or promote
  110. products derived from this software without specific prior written permission.

  112. 9. This PERL PACKAGE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR
  113. IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE IMPLIED
  114. WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
